DANISH SIDDIQUI

DANISHSIDDIQUI

19 May 1983-16 July 2021

The best photojournalist India has had in a half-century. Danish's work has been inspiring
me to create my own set of work in illustrations. He has been a true inspiration and a heavy influence on me and many like me; both aesthetically and ideologicall.

His absence in the field of photojournalism and conflict art will be felt for decades to come. May he rest in power, and may more photojournalists and conflict artists get inspired by his work and reflect upon it to develop genuine documentation of our society, culture, politics and economy.

His death-by-Taliban has been mourned across the world, in every democratic/progressive polity - but not by India's Hinduttvavādī dispensation. The saffronistrolls under the control of the Sangh Parivār are abusing him, instead, for having been a Muslim who tore the veil off the government's monstrous mishandling of the coronacrisis, and are celebrating his killing.

And, so, here these Hinduttvavādīs are, supporting the Islamist, Hinduphobic Taliban, by default.

The very Taliban that had, in May 2001, passed an edict requiring Hindus in Afghanistan to wear identifying yellow badges, and Hindu women to wear burqās.Much as one mourns Siddiqui's death, one mourns the death of secular democracy in India more.

The Indian-origin British übersculptor Anish Kapoor had a point when he called the saffronistas, in June 2021, the "Hindu Taliban".
